Long Run Eats

Today’s Happy Note: Got in a really good balance of friend time and relaxation time.  This balance is always hard for me to find, so it’s encouraging when it works out and I get to see people I love without feeling overwhelmed.

And see the people I love I did! Starting bright and early this morning…

Bloggers!  Left to right in the picture above (taken in a weird digital window thingy): Jess (Fit Chick In The City), Kath (Kath Eats Real Food), Tina (Carrots ‘N Cake), Me, and Roni (Roni’s Weigh).  Tara (Tall Tara) also ran with us but left before the pictures.

We set out for 6 miles in CP (the main loop, hills and all).  These girls are fast and I had to work!  It was good for me though.  I did another two and a half afterwards for an 8.5 mile long run, plus a mile walking.

Came home and made a giant blueberry-banana SIAB topped with a crumbled blueberry muffin (I had half on the smoothie and half as a snack in the early evening).

I read and relaxed in bed for a bit then met up with my friend Joy for yoga.  It was a good class — a lot of leg work but not too much.  Lots of binds and stretchy poses too.  And the teacher used the most amazing lemony-citronella lotion or oil when she massaged our faces at the end.  Best part!

Time for lunch with my cousin.

We went to a pretty good macrobiotic place  — I was craving some simple veg, brown rice, and tofu.  I rolled with a tofu scramble with tempeh bacon.  It pretty much made my macrobiotic lunch dreams come true (what, you don’t have those dreams?).

Got back to the apartment and rested/watched netflix.  In other words a perfect lazy Sunday afternoon.  Also prepped veggies, went for a little walk, and chatted with my parents.

Afternoon snack was big:

Chocolate-peanut-caramel protein smoothie with extra PB and a clif mojo bar.  So I wasn’t too hungry for dinner.  In fact, it had been over four hours and I still wasn’t hungry so I freaked out a little bit.  I have been practicing listening to my body and eating intuitively while I lose weight (and I think it’s a good habit in general), but didn’t want to skip dinner altogether.  I got a wee bit panicked, actually.  I made a light dinner and dessert which seemed like a good compromise.  What do you do in this kind of situation?

I am, however, proud of myself that I am getting better at understanding when I am hungry and what that feels like and what I need to satisfy it.  That’s an accomplishment.

Two scrambled eggs and lots of scrambled veggies (yellow squash, green pepper, and avocado squash) with a bit of cheese melted on top.  Nice and delicious.

I’m munching on a pear with maple PB and a few squares of dark chocolate right now.  It’s an amazing combination!  If I could only eat one food for the rest of life, it might be PB; it’s got great taste, fats, protein, and carbs.  Pretty wonderful if you ask me.  What food would you choose?

So here we have another full day of (long run) eats.  I think it was probably a good amount but I just kind of feel full.  Maybe it’s just hormones/bloating?

Whatever.

Busy week ahead.  Things to look forward to:

~Lots more running

~Celebration/graduation for the students (my babies!) in second job

~Time to cook/bake/experiment in the kitchen in the evenings

~Top Chef

~Lots of magazines and books to read

What are you looking forward to?

whenever i’m not hungry when i “should” be i usually make myself a small meal out of whole foods. or i eat a piece of cake, and that jogs the appetite. 🙂

Ooh nice that you had a bloggers run! And I love your attitude towards eating at the moment – I’m just in the middle of reading a couple of Geneen Roth books and she advocates a similar approach…I seem to remember you might have mentioned reading stuff by her? It’s really interesting and it’s certainly changing the way I think about my relationship with food and myself…

Yes! I read her book Women, Food, and God and really loved it. I might take a look at some others. Would you recommend any in particular?

    What a fun run!
I encounter those situations where I’m not so hungry. I either wait until i get hungry or I make something light, or eat something small like an apple, and eventually I get a bit hungry. You do the right thing by listening to your body – everything evens out if you just give it what it wants.

Looks like a great run!! I wish I’d stuck around in the city a bit longer this weekend! I’m trying to eat more intuitively as well, but it’s HARD, especially when I have ED thoughts competing with recovery thoughts competing with intuitive thoughts.

ED: “You already had PB today. You don’t need more.”
Recovery: “Eat as much PB as you want! Your body NEEDS it!!”
Intuitive: “You’re not even hungry. You’re eating out of boredom.”

Argh!! I usually go with your route and eat something small though. This week I’m most looking forward to leaving for HLS on Thursday. CANNOT WAIT!!! Hope you have a great Monday love!!

it does sound like you had a lovely weekend.

i agree that that was an odd situation. i try to eat every fourish hours but just listen to body and eat whatever it wants. yesterday i was a full from a big weekend of eating and super hot. i am smoothies topped with cereal twice! it is what i was craving so i went for it. i’ll just make sure to eat more veggies today to balance things out.

    enjoy your week!

I dream in macrobiotic too 🙂 That food looks awesome.
I’m really bad about hunger cues too, and your situation sounds like something that happens to me all the time. I usually do the same and make something very small to eat, but then that usually leads to me snacking on even more food. I never win!
I’m a lot better about eating intuitively when I’m alone, though. When my boyfriend prepares food when I’m not hungry, the smell or sight of it usually makes me want to eat too. When I’m by myself though, I eat only when I am hungry.
And, it looks like you had so much fun on that run!

i have a harder time eating on days i run because my body is a bit more dehydrated and i usually feel more nauseous as the day wears on. so in that situation i will totally just choose veggies or something light and then the next day when im hungry i fill up more and have a larger breakfast. i think your situation is really normal and u handled it the best way u did too.

Oooh, I can feel the blogger love on that run!

I hate when I’m not hungry when I expect to be. I enjoy eating so much that it’s off-putting when I’m not hungry. I usually end up eating, maybe sort of a compromise like you did, because the idea of skipping a meal is even more off-putting.

Looks like you had a great run! I have really tried to get myself into intuitive eating. I have been that way my whole life, but once I married my husband who eats way more than me and doesn’t gain an ounce, I had to learn to not eat like him. It’s hard! But I’m starting to get the hang of it.

    Sounds like a fun day!!!
I made a dinner you’d be proud of for my first night in my apartment:
Veggie soup with beans, potatoes, yams, turnips, parsnips, corn, carrots, onions, tomatoes, garlic, celery and mushrooms.
    Impressed yet?
